STEM Majors vs. Liberal Arts Majors

20 Pg. BioChem Lab vs Lesson Plans

Another funny tweet about this debate.

The story begins in the meme state of Twitter.com, where one STEM major declared a war against those pertaining to the liberal arts. The author of the tweet, which has since been taken down (but I also can't seem to find), implied that liberal arts majors, specifically those in education, were irrelevant in terms of the rigor they faced in their university. The STEM major said she was working on a very long lab report, while her counterpart was cutting out gingerbread men and stressing over her "easy" assignment.

Now, as a STEM major myself, I found the tweet to be very amusing. However, this tweet has then since led to a very heated and important debate amongst students. Is STEM harder than liberal arts? Are education majors exaggerating the difficulty of their lesson plans? Are STEM majors just a bunch of 4.0 GPA stuck ups?

As someone pursuing a biology/pre-medicine major, dating a political science major, oftentimes as a couple we find ourselves debating whose classes and assignments are harder (and who is the superior meme savage lord, but that's another story). To me, memorizing the hundreds of anatomical structures in the human body is WAY more challenging than reading a 200+ word book for a history class. To him, flashcard studying is WAY easier than sitting through his three hour black and white war film for History 265.

Now, stepping off my high horse for this second, I realize that as I am typing this, I would have never been interested in writing if it weren't for my liberal arts classes. In middle school, I had a very strict teacher for my Accelerated Language Arts class. If it weren't for her, I would have never continued to take AP or advanced LA courses throughout high school. I LOVED reading and writing. I loved analyzing Shakespeare and having fishbowl discussions about literary classics. However, my love for science ultimately led me to pursuing a career in medicine.

In the back of my head, I remain with the notion that maybe one day I can teach and lead students to success in the medical world. As funny and relatable that tweet may have seemed, the one pictured above is just as hilarious. In reality, we are all just college students struggling to make it to Christmas break without dropping out. Without liberal arts or education majors we wouldn't have fallen in love with whatever profession we are pursuing at the moment. I mean think about it, our schools growing up were based solely on the liberal arts curriculum. It wasn't until recently schools began integrating STEM extracurricular activities and curriculum for the upcoming generation—which is pretty cool!

We are all headed to one similar end goal, GRADUATION. Besides, there shouldn't be a feud between STEM and liberal arts majors. Instead, we should talk about business majors... now that's a profession to be debated.

Anyway, I shall end this now. I have to go back to studying for my Inorganic Chemistry, Anatomy & Physiology, and Biology finals. ;)

Sincerely,

Natalia
