How to Get Good Grades and Have an Advantage Over Your Classmates

Tests. I mean, we all hate them. Sitting there in that cubicle of a classroom and regurgitating the information you learned weeks prior—not fun for anyone, trust me. Yet, there really are a few simple steps you can take—besides your typical flashcards of course—in order to know, for sure, that you will receive a good grade on that exam.

1. Make a study guide.

I thought this was an obvious one, yet when I asked my friends if they did this, most of the time it was a no!? What...!? If their professor did not make them one, they did not do a study guide... This tip is LIFE-CHANGING. How does just reading the textbook over and over help you?! It doesn't! Read the textbook chapters you need, look over the lectures from class, and highlight what you find significant. Usually what the professor talks most about will definitely be on the test. Then, make a pretty looking study guide that will make it fun to study from! Just read it out loud constantly, read it, read it, read it! You will memorize the information in no time.

2. Relate what you are learning to your everyday life.

The most HELPFUL studying tip I have learned is to relate what I am learning to things in my life. For example, if I am learning something in psychology, I will relate it to myself or a friend. This automatically helps me remember what I learned as I have connected it to something else in my brain. It will help you tremendously, trust me!

3. Teach it!

When I am alone in my room and studying for a test, I will literally speak it out loud as if I am teaching the information to someone else. If you have any friends or a parent that is not busy, you can even ask to call them and just talk about something in class. You saying the information in a different way is guaranteed for you to remember! This really allows you to think about your knowledge in a new way and will allow you to process the concepts completely.

4. Quizlet!!!

I am a Quizlet advocate! Actually, if it was not for Quizlet, I probably would have failed out of college by now. Not only if someone took the same class as you before there will be study guides ALREADY MADE, but if you make your own flashcards, it is so easy to use. If you are walking to class or in the car, you can easily study from the comfort of your own phone. This allows you to study wherever and whenever. You have no excuses!

5. Mock Test!

When I have a big test, like 70 percent of my final grade big, I will make a mock test in order to see if I know the information. For example, I will take my study guide, take away essential key terms, and see if I can connect the dots. This will ease any test anxiety you have!

6. Practice mindfulness!

On the big test day, before you write ANYTHING on that paper, close your eyes, remember that it is just a test, and take a few deep breaths. I know this can seem impossible when you want to rush and see the questions. TRUST ME. A few seconds to calm yourself down so that your text anxiety does not take over is crucial. Having this moment will literally take the weight off your shoulders.

Well, there are my tips. I hope it helps at least someone out there with some test taking techniques. Test-taking literally sucks and nobody likes to do it. But, when you put in the work, the grades will show. Good luck!
